Pirated Championship

Peninsula Pirates end Umpqua's hopes for a championship in NWAC final four

The No. 1 ranked UCC women’s basketball team’s quest for a Northwest Athletic Conference championship ended Mon. March 9 with an 84-70 loss to the No. 4 ranked Peninsula Pirates at the Toyota Center.

“I wish I could say we lost tonight just because Peninsula outrebounded us offensively, or because they hit more three’s than we did, or scored more second chance points,” head coach Dave Stricklin said. “But it wasn’t just one thing they did, they beat us in every possible way they could beat a team.”

The Pirates (23-5) opened the first half with five 3-pointers in the first ten minutes of play, and finished the game with 42 percent shooting as a team from behind the arc. Peninsula converted 16 UCC turnovers into 19 points while grabbing 25 offensive rebounds.

“What’s really disappointing is, they [Peninsula] beat us at what we do best and how we beat teams,” Stricklin said. “We weren’t our best tonight and just couldn’t overcome it. They had a great game plan and were able to execute it.”

Six Pirates scored in double figures to pace a Peninsula offense that was led by Madison Pilster’s team high 18 points.

“Our biggest obstacle facing Umpqua was their size and speed as a team,” Pilster said. “All of them are so tall and fast that we had to fight for everything we could get.”

The Riverhawks (26-5) were led by Romanalyn Inocencio’s game high 24 points, while Anna Mumm contributed a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards. Ashli Payne added 16 points and nine rebounds.

“I don’t know how we get ready for our game tomorrow,” Stricklin said. “We have worked so hard this season. We have one more game to play together as team, that’s why we go out and play.”

Umpqua would go on to play the Southwestern Oregon Lakers March 10 for third place in the NWAC tournament.

Chukars Ground 'Hawks

Umpqua Community College men’s basketball team was eliminated from the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament following an 83-58 defeat to the Treasure Valley Chukars, Sunday March 8, at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Washington.

Treasure Valley’s defense (15-14) held UCC to 26 percent shooting from the field while turning 14 Riverhawk (19-11) turnovers into 19 second chance points.

“I think we played hard tonight, but we just didn’t execute,” head coach Daniel Leeworthy said. “But I think was a good learning experience for our guys next year. Those nine freshmen will now be sophomores next year, and we will definitely have more experience.”

Jeremy Smith tallied a team high 13 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists, while Jordan Madrid-Andrews added 12 points and five boards in defeat.

“To go from six wins last season, to 19 wins, is a huge step in the right direction to where I would like to build this program,” Leeworthy said. “We returned to the NWAC tournament for the first time in seven years and that was a giant leap forward for the future. We want to be where the women’s team is at and with what they’ve built. We’ve laid the foundation for that, and we will move forward, but I couldn’t be more proud of the guys this season.”

Sunday’s game marked the final time sophomores Madrid-Andrews, Smith and Michael Matteo wore a Riverhawk uniform.
